School to Basketball Links

The government led PESSCL (Physical Education, School Sport and Club Links) strategy was launched in 2002 and is designed to increase the number of children involved in regular sporting activities.

School to Club Links provide a very important part of this process, as they enable young athletes to continue in sporting activities outside of school hours.

The formal agreement between a School and a Club details the obligations of the school and club, and looks to make basketball a sustainable element of the curriculum. There are set targets to increase the numbers of coaches and officials and provide exit routes for children looking to develop their basketball skills. Download the agreement.

By establishing stronger links from Schools and School Sport Partnerships to Basketball Clubs with Clubmark or other accreditation, England Basketball aims to provide an opportunity for young players to develop by playing and training at a higher level. Clubs offer the benefit of regular contact with qualified coaches and officials and the chance to play in local and national league games.

Basketball in Schools

One of the main aims of England Basketball is to increase the number of young people playing basketball in this country. This can best be achieved through the introduction of the sport at a young age.

Children from primary levels up to sixth form and college levels benefit from regular sporting activities to enhance physical, mental and social development. Basketball promotes co-ordination, control, teamwork and leadership skills as well as good health, and is accessible to all.

England Basketball supports the development of Basketball in Schools, and has established a Player Pathway to help all players attain the highest level of play with the most support. There are systems in place to assist talented young players to reach high levels of achievement within the sport and to gain maximum benefits from the game. This includes the provision of trials to identify the best players and from there the progress to Area Performance centres and ultimately into national teams.

Basketball can be a rewarding part of the curriculum for many students and teachers. England Basketball currently have limited copies of ‘Coaching For Teachers Candidates Resource Pack’ which are available to teachers, and provide help and advice on teaching Basketball as part of the curriculum. Inter-School Games are encouraged, both ‘Friendly’ and Competitive, and these help children to develop social skills alongside their sporting talents.

ESBBA run competitions and tournaments throughout the year, for both boys and girls teams, in varying age groups. Regional Development Managers provide support for Schools and Clubs in each area, particularly for those wishing to establish new basketball opportunities or develop existing opportunities.
